Weekend Market Digest

After another exciting week in the life of the capital markets, there appears to be a groundswell of negativity rising towards the U.S. Federal Reserve as it heads into another FOMC meeting: It’s rough out there Taken together, the signs from the world economy are troubling. The credit binge will not unwind quickly or gently. Asset prices will fall. But central bankers and regulators have the tools to stop a downturn from becoming a slump, so long as they use them sensibly. Reacting to market panic with panicky rate cuts is likely to make things worse rather than better. The Fed [...]

Wednesday Market Digest

Seems like the “I Told You So” crowd is out in full force: stocks must be close to some kind of tradeable bottom. Jeremy Grantham is growling over at Bloomberg. WSJ reports, “Stocks Show Classic Bear Signals“, and quoted Paul Desmond and Hans Utsch amongst others. Dave Tice is dancing in the streets. Elsewhere, commodities markets once overrun by hot money are seeing “profit taking”. Yep, it’s just another day for performance-chasing market participants who always seem to be cursed with buying high and selling low. While the market managed to hold on an intraday [...]

‘Trader talk’ on CNBC during the midday report with Bob Pisani focused on a major rotation that he has been seeing the last two days. He pointed out that the banking stocks are the momentum trader’s play du jour. One of the best ways to take a look at this sector is via the Regional Bank HOLDRS (AMEX:RKH). Its contituents are 19 regional banks. We will look at some of the stronger bank stocks of the past two days with a view how they have performed in the last couple of months to keep things in perspective.

Ken Binmore: How to Play The Game

We’ve discussed looking at price as a function of Justin Mamis’ Sentiment Cycle. In a nutshell, his description of the pitfalls of investing dovetails with landmark findings of behavioral finance. Those who want to go that extra mile in trading or poker should explore the world of game theory. Check out Game Theory: A Very Short Introduction [Sample Chapter PDF] by Ken Binmore, the professor that devised the most diabolical auction ever held, raking in $22 billion POUNDS for the British government in the 3G telecom auction in 2000: Games are everywhere: Drivers manoeuvring in heavy traffic [...]

Dear Client (or why we did nothing)

Market Commentary and Outlook Since the beginning of the year the global stock markets have been struggling to stay afloat however it appears that today we are seeing some capitulation on the downside. Or what we like to call a selling climax. The weakness in the U.S. housing market we’ve been witnessing for almost two years now has [...]

Desperately Seeking… Answers

2008.01.20 @ 10:32 PM Eastern | LINK | 0 Comments

Both Trader Mike and Barry Ritholtz reported a big spike in traffic to their blogs over the past few days. We’ve experienced the same thing. What are people looking for? Answers? Well, if that is the case, then I have to invoke the Justin Mamis response: by the time you know the “why”, it’s too late. That’s why traders always shoot first and ask questions later. The monoline insurer camel is about to be shoved through the eye of the needle. With these companies effectively belly up, the cards will finally be laid out face up [...]
