Maintaining a “strong” Icelandic Krona

2008.03.26 @ 2:50 AM Eastern | LINK | 0 Comments

Pundits have spent the last months beating on U.S. Treasury Secretary Paulson over his apparent oxymoronic comments about “a strong Dollar”, but can you imagine what would have happened if they pursued the course Iceland has chosen? Bloomberg reports: Iceland’s central bank raised its key interest rate by a record 1.25 percentage points at an emergency meeting to halt a slump in the krona and a surge in inflation. The currency made its biggest ever jump against the euro. Sedlabanki raised the repo rate to 15 percent, the Reykjavik-based bank said on its Web site today. It hadn’t planned to hold a [...]

I won’t elaborate on the irony in the timing of this “special report” by The Economist. FYI: Part 8 of Build Your Own Investment Portfolio was uploaded yesterday. We also took a look at how one old trader transformed himself into a quant. Jeff asked about Ed Thorp’s book Beat The Street which was mentioned in a weekend WSJ article. Forget the book: I will upload his important research papers and discuss the Kelly Criterion in tonight’s podcast for subscribers. CLICK HERE to read Market Strategy and Trading Ideas for Tuesday. David Aronson: Re-Education of a Trader

Before the oopsie of 2007, Victor Niederhoffer and his Matador Fund Ltd. won the 2006 MARHedge Annual European Performance Award in the CTA category. I will never forget watching a number of clips on MARHedgeTV where he touted Steve Wisdom’s expertise in “multivariate statistics”, all the while telling the audience that in America, it is tradition to give second chances. It was brilliant. So you can imagine my amazement this morning when I saw Jeffrey Saut’s investment strategy [PDF]: According to professor David Aronson, as reprised by Mark Hulbert, “[we used] data from the beginning of 1942 through [...]

In Part 7, we reviewed two principles upon which portfolios are built. Let’s construct a portfolio for our archetype client, defined in Part 5: professional, owns a house, 15-20 years from retirement, takes full advantage of an employer-matched plan, has 3 dollars in the retirement account for every dollar in the trading account. The Core Portfolio Employer-matched plans tend to offer investment choices among traditional asset classes. Virtually all plans offer the equivalent of the following four exchange traded funds: U.S. Equities: S&P 500 (SPY), inception date 1993.01.29 International Equities: MSCI EAFE Index Fund (EFA), inception date 2001.08.14 U.S. Treasury Bonds: Lehman [...]
