Disorderly Prices? No Problem!

Did you ever think it possible that conservative Republicans would end up suggesting a “free market alternative” plan that tosses out market prices? Looks like Rep. John Culberson gets his way [WATCH VIDEO]. Politicians in Europe like it too. Finally, a solution to please left and right, but will taking the path of least resistance meet with the approval of the people? Can’t wait to see hedge and mutual funds cite “distressed or forced liquidation sales are not orderly transactions” as a reason to mark UP bad investments and stupid trades. This will sure come in handy [...]

Observations and Market Sentiment

It was a nice day for stocks, but not so good for bonds. Citizens are outraged as the credit markets brace for the European chapter of what Bob Pisani calls The Great Credit Meltdown. It’s also interesting to note that bloggers and TV commentators are calmly putting money to work, citing that the VIX has only been “this high before” a few times. Well, let’s not forget that during the Crash of 1987, the original VIX went as high as … 172.79! As consensus builds toward the Republican-floated “free market alternative” of simultaneously increasing the [...]

The 50/200 Cross: CHTT and POT

2008.09.30 @ 1:30 PM Eastern | LINK | 0 Comments

A stock scan performed after the close on Monday for “the cross” found two stocks that might be instructive: Chattem Inc. (NASD:CHTT) Potash Corp. (NYSE:POT) The 50/200 “Cross” The thesis goes something like this: the up or “golden” cross (50-day MA moves above 200-day MA) is supposed to be bullish while the down or “death” cross (50-day MA moves below 200-day MA) portends to weakness. What you should do with these ideas are up to you. While we personally don’t trade based on this criteria, it always good to watch to see if traders take action. Quite often, the best trades [...]

Oh boy, the 10 o’clock news will be something tonight! The populace got what it wanted today: no “Wall Street bailout”, TARPedoing $1.4 trillion of market cap in the process. Ron Paul got what he really wanted today too: a shot at Maverick Economics (scroll down to read text). Check out the video of Rep. John Culberson discussing the “free market alternative.” During the vote, CNBC interviewed someone on the floor named Steve, who said, “Perception is reality. . . Wall street is Main street.” But apparently, Main Street does not believe it…yet. [...]

Biotechs: Buy The Big Dip Phase?

2008.09.29 @ 9:00 AM Eastern | LINK | 0 Comments

The majority of market participants are talking doom and gloom: financial Armageddon has seized the mindset of the average investor. They are acting like the proverbial frozen deer in front of oncoming car headlights. Please remember: while history has shown that a sound investment plan based on a diversified portfolio will serve you better, if like trading your mad money, then you must do your homework. While reviewing our ETF watchlist, the biggest outperformers lately have been short-oriented ETFs. There was one area that investors have been bullish during these gloomy times: Biotechnology. Let’s take a closer look at the [...]

As we go to press, news of the proposed rescue package is all over the news. [FULL TEXT] While Larry Summers obviously had his analysis in the can prior to the announcement, what remains to be seen is how many house Republicans will vote for the deal tomorrow given the “bailout revolt” from their constituents. [MORE] I have no idea how the proposal will affect frozen credit markets. As one of my friends said last week, the “bottom line is that you’re not going to trade with someone or lend them money if you don’t know that they’ll be [...]
