Back in 1984, media mogul Moses Znaimer began a revolutionary new venture by launching one of Canada’s first specialty channels: MuchMusic. At the time, Moses Znaimer was seen as a visionary for tapping in to youth culture as no other Canadian broadcaster had. By 2008, though, his company MZ Media had its sights set on another demographic: old people. But don’t let him catch you using that term. Moses Znaimer is now the Executive Director of CARP, which used to stand for the Canadian Association of Retired Persons but is now Canada’s Association for the Fifty Plus. Unfazed by an acronym that no longer works, Znaimer launched its new magazine at a press conference in January 2008. He also has a new name for aging Canadians, one that 14 million people can claim as their own if they like. It’s Zoomer — combining Boomer with zip. The sky might be falling, but the fact is life goes on. What better antidote to the market’s neuroses than jazz and travel?
- The legendary jazz pianist Chick Corea is currently on tour. CBC Radio host Jian Ghomeshi talked with him last week during his stop in Toronto to play Massey Hall. At the end of the interview, Chick graced the grand piano in studio Q and played freeform for a magnificent 5 minutes. [DOWNLOAD PODCAST]
- I just firmed up plans to visit Mexico City in late-May, so you can imagine my delight when the NY Times published 36 Hours in Puebla, Mexico about the “UNESCO World Heritage Site [that] offers colonial treasures, cafe-lined squares and a vibrant arts-and-crafts culture.” Check out the slideshow to see the places I’ll be visiting.
