$TRAN action has not been good.

T, yesterday's action had the feel of "short squeezing" to me. Not that rallies can't start that way. "Turnaround Tuesday" comes through again.

The Plywood Indicator.
I note the BNSF RR cars that travel from Canada to the US along my Pacific Coast bike route. During the real estate building craze one train might haul 50 cars of BC, wooden structual panels (plywood & OSB). Eventually the panel car count dropped to virtually zero. Some weeks back I counted a train with only two cars, and it was heading from South to North. So today I was surprised to see 19 cars heading South. That material maybe headed to repair flood damage in the US midwest or, who knows, new construction.

Dennis: I use the TWS Portfolio Trader to rebalance; it gets the job done at (I set it to) "market". If you wish to use limit orders, go ahead but the limit does not need to be at last Friday's close.

Once your account is funded, you should wait for a Monday to deploy.

The Thrift Savings Plan model portfolio will be added at month end. Many U.S. government employees are locked into this plan, so we are providing those subscribers with a way to make the most of what's offered by (yet another) restrictive plan.

The High Net Worth portfolio will be announced mid-July...

Hi Teresa, I am a new subscriber and having problem getting started. My questions are:

On the initial setup should I setup my orders with the percentage allocation per one of your portfolio, using limit-order based on last Friday's closing prices? What if the limit order did not hit, should I then change that to a market order? What is your recommended strategy.

My IB account takes a while to get funded. Once the funding got clear for trading, can I start the portfolio setup on mid-week or should I wait until the following Monday?

On rebalancing, if limit order is used and failed to hit, what is your recommended strategy?

Can you tell me more of your “high net worth” portfolio and TSP portfolio.

Robert: Margin expense is not factored in because everyone is charged a different amount. The income portion of total return can be assumed to be perhaps 2%, but where it gets hard to disentangle is reinvestment of dividends.

Teresa,

Quick note.

For those who do rebalancing in the manual form (like I do), you might have gone nuts yesterday or today trying to figure out what happened to your portfolio.

VXF has done a stock split so all of a sudden, you have doubled the quantity for half the price (end result the same).

But if you do take into account last Monday figures (I mean before the stock split, the rebalancing act might give you bananas.

Take care,

Daniel

For a quick overview of sectors and ETF's with the ability to also see what is in the ETF, the Finviz.com heat map is cool.

(Double click on ETF to get an overview. After that, click on Exchange Traded Fund to get holdings.)

Since the altitude and internet connection rendered me unable to work in Mexico City, I had a lot of time to think about your missives.

As he showed me the town, Carlos and I had many philosophical discussions about what it is to be a trader (a modern version of a hunter) and why people fail.

I'll explain more in the next podcast.
